This well-written and researched book presents a timely challenge to the field of education. In it Paul Herder lays out his vision for a constructivist approach to education, inspired in part by the work of J. Krishnamurti. He starts with the question, "What is the purpose of education?" and explores that question as it pertains to classroom atmosphere, the paradox of thought, transparency, and problem-based learning. The book is well-structured and the chapters are clearly focused. What is particularly refreshing about Mr. Herder's approach to education, is that, while rooted in easy to understand (but in no way simplified) science, he always returns to the actual practice of working with students in the classroom. A book for every teacher and administrator (and yes, students at all levels as well) with an interesest in exploring the big questions of education and doing something practical with them.
This is a must-read for serious educators in every school.
I have known Paul for many years and bought this book to support his mission. Paul is a multi-talented Renaissance man.
I found the book really well-done, and graceful to the superior quality of wisdom that Krishnamurti brought to the field of education.
The content is rich, well thought-out, well developed, and the presentation (cover, fonts, etc) is great. It's a wonderful job of self-publishing.
In his book, Herder introduces an interesting framework by aligning Krishnamurti's views on education to those of constructivism. As is well known, Krishnamurti had revolutionary ideas on the meaning and purpose of education. Be that as it may, one thing he refrained from doing was giving any specific methods or approaches on how to implement such visions. As he frequently iterated, the method will all too often have the tendency to overtake relationships. As an educator at the Oak Grove School, Herder admits to having wrestled with this dynamic. The question that persists among such educators is "how" exactly to implement such a revolutionary vision in education? Drawing from the constructivist paradigm, Herder offers one possible way that such a vision can be implemented. And, in constructivist form, he is cautious to warn that it is only one of many potential approaches to implementing Krishnamurti's views. As a practical aid for teachers and students alike, he is able to provide many useful tools for classroom exercises, community projects and individual study. Indeed, it is a resource offering many practical implements predicated on the assumption that education is about the teacher and student sharing an inquiry into the human condition.
The book is segmented into four parts. Addressing classroom atmosphere first, Herder touches on some basic dynamics in human psychology that all educators must grapple with. Here he discusses the conditioning of the mind - both the student's and teacher's - as a central issue that needs to be observed and questioned. This provides a jumping off point into the nature of thought, and learning to understand oneself in the "mirror-of-relationship". It addresses common classroom issues such as authority, fear, reward, punishment and competition. The second part takes yet a deeper turn into psychology, talking about the paradoxical nature of thought. Framing it as such, Herder is able to show how aspects of thought such as memory, comparison and classification can either be used to enhance or degrade the individual and social experience. The third and fourth sections of the book get more explicitly into praxis. Again, the underlying focus is on a shared-inquiry into the nature of thought. Here, he introduces a diverse range of facilitation methods for small group activities, large group activities and problem based learning.
I would (and have) recommend this book to educators, parents and students alike - it is timely, relevant and a great resource for anyone interested in revolutionary change.
